The advancement of treatments in cancer care in America is showing in the data now, that there are more cancer survivors overcoming the cancer disease than there was in the 1970’s and 80’s. Because treatment seems to be working better this is causing problem in the healthcare system. No longer can someone be left to fend for themselves after treatment and be ignored as a group. Due to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the changes in new laws with pre existing conditions, health care reform and the College of American Surgeons new standards for accreditation for cancer centers, these centers must start programs for cancer survivors, psychosocial issues, and cancer patient navigation as part of their system. The landscape has changed; no longer can the long term side effects of cancer treatment be ignored. The definition of survivorship has changed as well stating that survivorship starts at diagnosis and continues until the patient no longer needs help in their treatment process. Walking Miracles.Org will focus on these services because our founder is a two time childhood survivor. Our services will engage and connect our communities and the state of West Virginia with the best education, specialist for presentations, organizations and services so that as a community we can help each other if a friend, spouse, co worker, or family member is diagnosed we can band together and walk with them and help them because we understand and have overcome cancer. Walking Miracles.Org will be a catalyst in West Virginia by being active in the communities in the state and use the media, surveys, social media, speaking events, websites, and many other resources to bring survivors and newly diagnosed patients together. We will get input by creating assessments on what you feel is missing in the healthcare system and address the needs and be a voice and advocate for you and the monies raised through galas, donations, events and services billed will be used for the needs you assessed. WHY? Because the founder has been in remission for several years but his experience and yours is different and we need to combine the most pressing and important recurring needs and fix those issues and the only way to do it is through community, love and money.

The Survivorship Navigators Role: Help Remove Long Term Barriers: The Survivorship Navigator will provide education and referrals to long term clinics to follow long term treatment effects, check on psychosocial issues and any other concerns and refer them to a licensed counselor on staff to address these issuesand be a sipport system to the patients and families for thier lifetime.
