During the first 6 months of this year, we will be asking families, friends, business owners and anyone in the communities in WV who may know, have lost someone or may be a cancer survivor, if they would like to be a  "Founding Donor."  A Founding Donor is a person, company or organization that would like to donate $1K or more to help Walking Miracles start achieving its goal of assisting  cancer patients and their families in West Virginia. As a Founding donor, you will have your name listed and business name and webpage linked as a supporter on our website on a special page, recognized at a dinner in your honor as we welcome new Founding members, as well as  invitations to special events yearly. You are a vital part of our organization as you will be assisting us in reaching a Founding Donor goal of $150K by October of 2012.  That is a celebration month for myself personally. I will be achieving the dream I had wanted to achieve by my 40th birthday, which is in October after 27 years in remission. If  you would like to be a founding donor, please contact us at 304-550-9599. We are a 501c3 non profit corporation and all gifts are tax deductible.

I have been networking with people all my life trying to make this vision of a center that I have conceptualized since I was in college in 1994 and to make it come true. In 1998, I lost my best friend, math tutor (treatment with cranial radiation and chemotherapy caused me to have issues in math) and the only real support system outside of my family who understood me, my cousin Nancy Hunt, who passed away from breast cancer. Ten years later, I decided I wanted to get this off the ground. While living in NC, I began having  long term effects of my past treatments as a cancer survivor it always scares me when these things happen. I had a petrified gallbladder removed and was working a retail job and did not have health insurance. Two years later I began showing signs of heart failure and did not know what was going on. I had to have an emergency pacemaker inserted under my shoulder blade becuse my heart rate was 28 beats per minute my electrical system went out, I was still working in retail  with no health insurance and life was so stressful financially and mentally. I came home to West Virginia in 2008 after being gone for 10 years. I have been able to talk and network with several supporters of my idea throught my life, but I had no way to physically put it together. When I came home I heard about cancer rapidly going through my community in people who supported me during my childhood cancer. It was devastating to me. I felt so bad because I could not help more and most of the people I knew went out of state for treatment. WHY I wondered?
Because of my ability to network with people and with a growing awareness of how cancer is effecting our community, I decided to put together a board who is comprised of people who know about the issues patients face during  their cancer. Two of our members worked at Nationally recognized cancer centers one in North Carolina and the other in Nebraska and understood the difficulties themselves as they too tried to make it truly patient centered and it was later reverted back to the hospitals way of business. We have combined their knowledge and experience for your benefit plus the skills of cancer survivors, caregivers, and and pioneers of programs in psycohsocial oncology, cancer patient navigation and cancer survivorship care. Today these programs are being recogzied and implemented with and we are happy to have all these years of experience. Their titles though are as important to me as they are as people. We have former directors of nationally recognized cancer centers, cancer patient navigator program directors, nurses in the oncology field, community outreach specialists, directors of nursing  in the oncology field, cancer support group leaders, medical coding specialists and physicians. I did not choose them because of their titles, job experience, or certifications.  I chose them because each of them had to face Cancer like my family and I did.as a caregiver, friend, and family member. They saw, understood, and had the same frustrations I did coming from the patient side and it has impacted all our lives. We want to work together to give back to and help you and walk with you throught the journey of  your cancer survivorship

After two challenging childhood cancer experiences and years of  servicing and studying patient care, Brett Wilson, a Christian childhood cancer survivor, was inspired to found Walking Miracles, and the website, walkingmiracles.org, 5 years ago as a way to change the face of cancer patient support services by providing cancer survivorship services cancer patient navigation and counseling inWV. He started  by volunteering his time and experience to helping cancer patients and survivors like himself. The name, Walking Miracles, had a special connotation for him, as this is what  he was called all of his life for overcoming the odds and defying the hopeless outlook given to him of the cancers he had as a child. Wilson states his philosophy as "I thank God everyday for giving me the opportunity to share what he has done in my life". A dynamic and passionate 2 time childhood cancer survivor, Wilson  had Leukemia when he was 2 years old and non Hodgkin's lymphoma when he was 9 years old. He is now 26 years in remission.  "As I examine my life, I am now 39,  and I know God is not done with me yet. I have been a cancer survivor for 26 years and I have a unique patient and professional perspective very few people have

Our Mission PDF Print E-mail

To help navigate cancer patients and their families through barriers to care during their treatment and through the healing process, with “one on one” contact. West Virginia has many rural areas and there are issues in the Appalachia community that are different in other places. That is why Walking Miracles.Org has been created. We have recognized the discord between cancer services and treatment and want to help make this a more seamless process for new patients and survivors and their families.
